A lesson on Geography needs to have all the critcal aspects of the discipline of Social Studies and of Geography. It should develop students civic capacity as well as answer the questions of: Where? Why? So what?

 

We are also committed to being teachers for the future. So although much of what we may cover has to do with the rich fabric of our past--we will share it with students in a manner that will be compelling for our students who are digital natives and who are going to be teaching us how to think and organize and analyze in new genres and using new tools.

 

Each group will do a presentation of their materials at the F2F in early December. You should keep that in mind as you begin your planning stages. What will you share or ask us to do in our time together. There won't be too much time -- just about 20 minutes for each group.

 

Be sure to:

  1. Align your materials with actual MN standards.
  2. Uncover the essential question that can generate the inquiry around this topic.
  3. Align your assessment with your objectives (tied to MN standards). How will you really know they know the material? At what points along the journey?
  4. Make it interesting or fun or skill building. And make it content-rich and highly scaffolded for students with low English skills and/or with Special Needs.
    • Think about what STUDENTS can do in your lesson. For instance -- what research could students do to add to the lesson materials in a relevant and realistic manner.?
    • Could you present information on an area of your region and then have students upload their personal narratives of an experience in that region?
    • Could you have students do research projects on local historic sites and create walking podcast for visitors to your city?
    • Could you share images or video in a format that wouldn't be overwhelmingly enormous? What part of what you are going to teach will translate into skills, knowledge or understanding that students value?

 

So - let's get started. Begin brainstorming ideas and direction. Don't do yet. Give everyone time to weigh in.

Consider creating a regional resource page. Be sure in this wiki, as with the children's literature wiki, that all new pages start with the name of your region. For instance, you might create a Northwest MN Internet Resources page if you were in the Northwest group.
